Job Hunting in Education; Ohio. Sending out resumes, but not getting phone calls or interviews. What's wrong? |
I just graduated with my masters in school counseling and am looking for a job in August. So far, I have not been called for an interview and would like some helpful advice. There aren't many jobs in my area, but I apply for all within an hours drive, then send a hardcopy of a cover letter, my resume, and a list of professional and personal references. Friends and colleagues all say my resume is great. I have a good deal of experience and a great list of references. Should I be sending letters of recommendation at this stage as well? Should I always follow up with a phone call? Should I try to make a face to face meeting to introduce myself? How much can I do without becoming a pest? I appreciate any help you can offer. Thank you. Hi, The most important thing to remember about job searches is that you should use a combination of methods regardless of your location. Networking - Register at your local Unemployment Office (you don't need to be on unemployment to register for their assistance). They often will have networking groups on a regular basis. They also are a good source for the jobs that never show up in the paper or online. Check your local paper -- In many cases the paper's classified are now online. Search Smart Online -- If you don't have a lot of time, spend most of your time at sites that aggregate the job feeds from several job search engines. Prominently these include indeed.com and thingamajob.com. Organization -- I use a free online application that allows you to track your ads, jobs you apply for, send or print mail merged correspondence, and track your job search history. This site is jobsearchlog.com Good Luck, Karen http://indeed.com http://job-hunt.org http://jobsearchlog.com JUST SEND THEM A COVER LETTER, ALSO HOW IS YOUR RESUME SET UP? DOES YOUR RESUME HAVE THE FOLLOW?: OBJECTIVE SPECIAL SKILLS ACCOMPLISHMENTS WORK HISTORY EDUCATION/TRAINING Make sure your resume ONLY has the most relevant information and that it is no longer than 2 pages (1 page is preferred). Include the info in order of importance, so if you have a lot of work exp, list that first, or if you have more school experience, list that first, then work. Make sure to also have a precise objective, and a cover letter that details information that you could not put in the resume. Don't send references or letters of recommendation until they ask you to. The best way to follow up is to know who is supposed to look at your resume (the recruiter) and follow up every week or so, reminding him/her of your interest. |
