Why is my education not enough to get me a job?

I went to school and got my associates degree. Then I became a stay at home mom for a few years, now I want to go find a job but it seems that everywhere you need to have work experience as well as an education. I can't afford to go back to school just yet, and i don't really want to start at a minimum wage job. I would really want to get into social work or a criminal justice field where should I start?

Go to the college that you graduated from, check to see if they have an alumni job placement service.
The college I work at does, and often employers are looking for graduates and understand that the experience isn't there yet. Good Luck
The A.A. degree (and I have one too!) is perceived as a stepping stone to more degrees -- not the culmination of one's studies. There is an expectation in the CJ field, and in social work, that people will be "credentialed" -- i.e. have not just B.A./B.S. but also Master's degrees.

With the A.A. you could transfer to a four-year institution and then GET INTERSHIP EXPERIENCES -- that way you'll get credit towards you Bachelor's and work experience for your resume. That's how I changed careers at age 40!
my first suggestion is not what you want to hear, but it would be alot eaiser for you if you were already in the work market, or get your foot in the door then begin to search for a career in your field..second suggestion would be to contact any and all agencies including the justice system to get in doing what you want to do,however realize that you will probably not get the amount of money that you think you are worth. you have to get experience and getting ones foot in the job market door is a start to a career. the aa degree just shows you furthered your education but a foot in job market shoes action of wanting to put it to work
experience
An AA degree is just a steping stone. It really doesnt hold much value. Like a high schoold deploma, it just states that you have an education and a lower one at that. Go to the college and ask to see a placement counseler. Plan on returning to college for you BS/BA I can tell you that most places are looking for people that have at least 5 years expierence along with a BS/BA or a Masters degree.
My impression is that the majority of social workers is that they have at least a BA but, more often a MSW. In terms of criminal justice, many corrections employees do not have a BA nor do all police officers. Although a BA may be the norm especially in larger departments.

Here are four suggestions:
a) Research the type of jobs you are interested in. Find out where they are and what types of people are serving in those capacities. An nformational interview can also be a good tool.
b) Check with your college placement office. They are connected to the job market and know who tends to hire their graduates.
c) Be realistic about your background. While you probably have much life experience, that doesn't always translate to the resume. To be blunt: you have no job experience and a first step degree. That means that there are 18 and 21 year olds with that amount of experience and education. What sets you apart?
d) Don't rule out school until you review all financial aid options.

When I am hiring, I tend to look for two categories: 1) Young in THIS career (not the same as young in age nor new to the job market) but with an advanced degree and some sort of relevant experience (even a three month internship or some focused research); or 2) People with in depth on point job experience.

When hiring staff, I want to hire staff who can offer the most to the organization. For better or worse, experience and training are the tools employers use.
