Do you pick the education that interests you or the one that has job opportunities? |
What did you do? What advice to do you offer when asked? Should the government create incentives for young people to pick educations that have the best job opportunities? I picked the field that interested me. There was no way I was going to do something for the rest of my life that I didn't have a passion for! I was fortunate to have entered into a field that is somewhat in demand right now, though. I say you should study what you enjoy, but also have a back-up plan if you choose something that doesn't have a lot of opportunities. For example, my cousin loves theatre. She is majoring in drama (or something related) but minoring in something more practical since it's difficult to "make it" in the acting world. I know people who have chosen their careers just for the money. All they talk about is money and their investments. Talk about dry, dull, and boring! So much of your life is spent at work. It's important to do something that challenges you and inspires you. The first time around, I picked what was interesting (PoliSci), and ended up working as a cashier at Home Depot. Ten years later, I have the chance to start over again getting a second BA, and THIS time I am studying English toward a single subject teaching credential... I tell people to study what they want, just be prepared to take the consequences. I always say, you can major in the thing you really love, and minor in the money field. Follow your heart and keep your feet on the ground. I picked the one that interested me, Interior Design, but unfortunately it wasn't as great as i thought, I am moving now into the hotel industry and planning to study Business, education is so expensive that I really think that the government should create incentives not only for young people but also for anybody that wants to pursue a higher education for best job opportunities. |
