What should the aims of higher education be?

I often wonder this since I made the decision to go back to school. I did it in the pursuit of education and finding a better job, but I realized I could have the same job, just higher pay. So what are the goals of higher education or what should they be? Also, in regard to education in general, why should we study areas like history and art? I know why I think we should, but I'd like to hear others opinions.

I think the focus needs to be more on the course of study we chose, NOT the filler type classes we already took in high school. A few of those fundamental fillers is fine, but too many takes away from whatever we are trying to pursue. I don't feel I got enough out of my college education because I was too worried about the filler classes than my actual major classes. Plus I took far more fillers than courses that actually related to my major!
some people might say to get a better job to earn more money. Others might say to better yourself. I would say to make yourself a better person to be of best service to others.
