Forensic Science Education?

My real interest is to become a Forensic Chemist (and no, not because of stupid shows like CSI). I know that pay isn't that great, starting (as are most jobs). My questions:
1) Whats a good education background? I know schools are starting to offer a forensic science major. Would it be comparable to major in Chemistry?
2) Does it have a good advancement rate? I don't want to be stuck making $40,000 a year until I'm 35.

I'm just really confused about the schooling. I can't find a clear answer anywhere on the internet, and can't find anyone to contact. I'm only a sophmore in High School, but my parents want to start visiting colleges this summer (I know...). Its easy to find a chemistry major at many colleges, just harder to find a forensic science major (I can always go to Penn State, but I've got my heart set on a school that only offers Chem/Bio).

Thanks! Any other advice?

I live in Indiana and the best school is IUPUI, they have a Forensic Degree Program. It has some cool classes. I have heard that they money is pretty good after you get your degree. It takes 4 years and lots of math.
