Taking job below education level - need a bit of input? |
I currently have a job that is within the field of my BS degree, although this is an on-call auxiliary position. Just recently I applied for and got another job besides that, that will be on-call as well and temporary, but it is way below my education. Although my main reason for taking this job is to get out of the house and make my time worthwile (money is secondary), how can I rationalize it in my mind so I can feel a bit better about doing this job? Do other people actually do that too - get jobs below their levels just because? Right now I feel like I am going into this job thinking that I am better than that and that I shouldn't be there.. that there would have been lots of other people for the position. I really didn't mean to come across arrogant or anything.. was just thinking in factual terms that I am "better", comparing my education to the job requirements. You are not better than anyone....I'm not trying to be mean, but I guess I am saying to not be arrogant. I am in the same situation. I thought that I would make good money, find a good job, but I can't. I have my master's in psych, too. There are so many psych majors out there...but just think of it as your way of being happy. Isn't happiness more important to you? LOTS of people take jobs below their education levels....I had a BA in psychology and had to work as a daycare worker making $7.29 an hour, then as a worker for a child with autism making $250 a week as there are no "actual" jobs for those with psych majors (as you cant be an actual psychologist with just a BA). I also know people with degrees working in fast food if they cant find relevant work experince, and know many waitresses/waiters with university degrees. Sometimes people do what they have to in order to pay the bills or until something else comes along. I worked with someone at my store who had a doctorate. He taught for a long period of time, but then grew tired of university politics and stopped. I have a masters in education and full time teach. I am also going for National Board Certification. This summer I took a job with Disney which was way below my education level, and the pay was horrible, but I needed that extra money during the harsh summer months and I actually enjoyed doing something totally different. I didn't have to bring my work home like I do with teaching every day and had a whole different perspective on life. Funny how issues at that store were so different from the issues I deal with at school. |
